When Jesus had taken the wine, he said, “It is finished.” And bowing his head, he handed over the spirit.
“It was not an utterance of thanksgiving that His suffering was over and finished, though the humiliation of the Son of Man was now at an end. It was rather that His life from the time of His birth to the time of His death had faithfully achieved what the Heavenly Father sent Him to do.” - Fulton Sheen
From the moment that Adam and Eve sinned God wanted to bring all of mankind back into His family. Two thousand years ago, “he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.”
He did this for you. He could not rest knowing that you would not experience His love for eternity. He died to bring you back into the family of God.
You are why we remember the day that Jesus’ body hung lifeless on the Cross. Not primarily out of the shame that your sin bore down on his shoulders as he walked to His crucifixion, no. We remember today because it is the moment that Christ proves His undying love for you by His death. As St. Paul tells the Romans, “God proves his love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us.”
Eternity for you was Jesus’ mission from the beginning. Thank Jesus for accomplishing His mission.
Prayer for today:
Thank you, Jesus. Amen.
Pray this prayer as often as you can throughout today.
